Dave Fionda’s campaign for the state representative seat formerly held by Charles A. Murphy received a major boost when Murphy endorsed the candidacy of his fellow Burlington Democrat at Fionda’s campaign kickoff event at the Burlington American Legion on Aug. 9. Fionda is among three candidates running to succeed Murphy in the district that includes Bedford, Burlington, and part of Wilmington. All three are running write-in campaigns in the Sept. 6 primary. Murphy announced June 22 he was resigning his seat July 31 to accept a job in the private sector. He had previously filed his nomination papers and withdrew too late for his name to be removed from the Democratic primary ballot. At Fionda’s kickoff, Murphy asked voters not to cast their ballots for him but instead to write in Fionda’s name, according to Fionda’s campaign. Fionda, a business consultant, is a former Town Meeting representative who has served on several town boards. The other announced contenders are Burlington Democrat Virginia E. Mooney, a longtime Town Meeting member and former selectwoman, and Burlington Selectman Walter Zenkin, who is unenrolled and running in the Republican primary.
